“LOOSE HIM, AND LET HIM GO”

One of the most significant episodes in our Savior's mortal ministry is the raising of Lazarus from the dead after he had lain in the tomb for four days. It is an astounding public miracle that illuminates core truths about Christ and His Atonement.

In the story Christ receives desperate word from Martha and Mary to come to Bethany, for their brother is deathly ill. Jesus deliberately delays His journey for two days, then announces that Lazarus is dead and that He and His disciples must go to him.

When Christ arrives in Bethany, Martha greets Him with weeping and a gentle rebuke: "Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died" (John 11:21). Martha's complaint is followed by her fervent testimony: "But I know, that even now, whatsoever thou wilt ask of God, God will give it thee" (v. 22). Jesus affirms His own role and identity: "I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live" (v. 25).

The grieving of the sisters, the wailing of the mourners, Christ's own tears, the hostility of certain ones in the crowd, and the melancholy of the grave site constitute a crescendo of human emotion. Jesus commands that the stone covering the tomb's entrance be removed. Martha objects, saying, "Lord, by this time he stinketh: for he hath been dead four days" (v. 39). Christ says, "If thou wouldest believe, thou shouldest see the glory of God" (v. 40). The stone is removed, and Jesus offers a prayer of gratitude.

The climactic moment comes when Christ cries out in a loud voice, "Lazarus, come forth" (v. 43). Can you imagine the combination of hope, terror, and surprise the people feel when Lazarus obeys and rises, "bound hand and foot with graveclothes: and his face . . . bound about with a napkin" (v. 44)? The sight and smell of this dead man must have been more than some could bear. Then came Christ's second command to certain others standing by: "Loose him, and let him go" (v. 44).

Christ was commanding the people to free Lazarus, to remove the graveclothes and unbind the wrappings from around his eyes, mouth, hands, and feet—the wrappings of the grave. For he lived again! Think of the joy! But can we imagine also the hesitancy of some to reach out and remove the graveclothes? No doubt some shrank away completely.

For me the Lazarus story provides one of the most powerful metaphors of the Atonement of Christ for all humankind. We are all like Lazarus, beloved of the Lord, but wrapped about in the graveclothes of this world.

I pray that the story of Lazarus will take root more deeply in all of us; that the power of the Atonement will give us courage to "come forth" and allow our graveclothes to be removed; and that we might be both the healers and the healed, the unbinders and the unbound.

THE SEVEN BLESSINGS OF ABRAHAM

Galatians 3:9-14
Galatians 3:9 So then they which be of faith are blessed with faithful Abraham.
- 10 For as many as are of the works of the law are under the curse: for it is written, Cursed is every one that continueth not in all things which are written in the book of the law to do them.
- 11 But that no man is justified by the law in the sight of God, it is evident: for, The just shall live by faith.
- 12 And the law is not of faith: but, The man that doeth them shall live in them.
- 13 Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us: for it is written, Cursed is every one that hangeth on a tree:
- 14 That the blessing of Abraham might come on the Gentiles through Jesus Christ; that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith.

There are more than 40 blessings in the Word given to Abraham either for him or those who would be through blessings would be blessed. In this sermon outline we list only seven of the blessings given to or through Abraham. The blessing of Abraham begin in Genesis 12: 1 Now the LORD had said unto Abram, Get thee out of thy country, and from thy kindred, and from thy father's house, unto a land that I will shew thee:
- 2 And I will make of thee a great nation, and I will bless thee, and make thy name great; and thou shalt be a blessing:
- 3 And I will bless them that bless thee, and curse him that curseth thee: and in thee shall all families of the earth be blessed.
May we as children of God receive all God have for us through our Great God and Saviour Jesus Christ.

I. The first blessing is Genesis 12:1 ...unto a land that I will shew thee:
God who desires to lead us by His Spirit would like to lead us to the place in our live to serve him.
A. Lead us to our spouse.
B. Lead us to our church.
C. Lead us to our education.
D. Lead us to our job.
E. Lead us in our calling.
We do this by letting the Holy Spirit Proverbs 3:5 Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. 6 In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.
God doesn't bless us just to make us happy; He blesses us to make us a blessing.

II. Blessing number two of Abraham. Genesis 12:2 And I will make of thee a great nation,
A. We are part of a great family, the family of God.
B. We do not join it. You have to be born into to it by receiving Jesus.
1. Shaking hands with a preacher and joining church is not enough.
a. You must be born again.

III. Blessing number three in Genesis 12:2 ...and I will bless thee,
A. God wants to bless us and meet every need of our lives. Phil 4:19 But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus.

B. He knows what we have need of before we know ourselves.
C. He wants us to have life and more abundantly. John 10:10 ..... The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.
D. He will do more than we can think or ask. How by the power in us, which is the Holy Spirit. Eph 3:20 Now unto him that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that worketh in us,

IV. Blessing number four. Genesis 12:2 ...and make thy name great,
A. Years ago my wife and I were guests of the Lord Mayor of Cheltenham, England. We were asked to sign the book of special guests. We signed our name below the signature of Queen Elizabeth the Queen of England. As I signed the book I was reminded of the Holy Spirit that Jesus has signed the Book of Life for me with His own precious blood. Praise the Lord!
B. We rejoice because God has made our names great because of Jesus.

V. Blessing number five Genesis 12:2 ...and thou shalt be a blessing:
A. God wants us to be a blessing to all people.
B. Take the Gospel to the world.
C. Our lights need to shine in the sin dark world.

VI. Blessing number six of Abraham Genesis 12:3 And I will bless them that bless thee,
A. God does not only want us to bless but also be a blessing.
B. When we bless others we can expect it to come back to us.
C. Some people have told us that they have given to our missionary outreaches because of both my natural and spiritual tie to my great great grandfather ......Abraham. They said God would bless them because of it. I have replied that it is because of God's promise not me.

VII. The seventh blessing of Abraham Genesis 12:3 ...and in thee shall all families of the earth be blessed.
A. Our acts of obedience, faith, righteousness and walking in the Holy Ghost power will bless all the families of the earth.
B. We must desire it with all our heart and then we will bless all the families of the earth.
1. We do it when we walk and live in the Word and Spirit.
2. God is more anxious to bestow his blessings on us than we are to receive them.

TIME OF REFRESHING

The biblical theme of refreshing has a variety of physical and spiritual meanings. In Scripture we read of refreshment by resting on the Sabbath (Ex. 23:12), with cool water after physical activity (Judg. 15:18-19), by soothing music (1 Sam. 16:23), and with encouraging fellowship (2 Tim. 1:16).
The apostle Peter describes a time of spiritual refreshment that took place on the Day of Pentecost. He exhorted his listeners to repent and respond to the gospel “that times of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord” (Acts 3:19). The apostle’s statement was especially meaningful to the Jewish audience with its reference to the millennium when Messiah would rule. But the good news of spiritual life would also be extended to the Gentiles (Acts 10).
Even now as believers we can experience a time of refreshing by quieting our hearts in a devotional time of prayer and Bible reading. When we spend time alone with the Lord, we can experience His peace and joy which renew us in spirit. Aren’t you thankful for these daily times of spiritual refreshment?
A Prayer: Lord, I need my spirit refreshed and renewed today. Speak to me through Your Word that I might hear Your heart, and help me to share my heart with You in prayer. Amen.
When we draw near to God, our minds are refreshed and our strength is renewed.

Join us in our Second year anniversary as God will be using his prepared vessel to open us up as concerning this topic, God bless you.
